To ensure smooth diplomatic proceedings during the upcoming high-level negotiations between US and Iranian officials, Islamabad authorities have implemented a rigorous traffic management strategy. If you are planning to travel within or through the capital on April 11 and 12, please take note of the following route adjustments and closures.
Major Road Closures and “Red Zone” Restrictions
The city’s Red Zone and its surrounding perimeters are currently off-limits to the public. The following primary arteries will be inaccessible:
- Srinagar Highway: Closed from Kashmir Chowk (Club Road) all the way to Zero Point.
- Serena Chowk Corridor: The stretch between Zero Point and Serena Chowk is shut.
- Jinnah Avenue: Blocked from Khayaban Chowk heading into the Blue Area.
- Margalla Road: No access between Faisal Chowk and Trail 3.
- The Expressway: Closed to all traffic from Zero Point down to Korral Chowk.
- Shakarparian Area: Roadways from Chand Tara Chowk leading to Seventh Avenue are cordoned off.
Guidelines for Heavy Vehicles
A strict ban on heavy traffic entering Islamabad is in effect for the duration of the summit April 11–12. Logistics providers and truck drivers should plan for significant delays or halt operations during this window.
Recommended Alternative Routes
To minimize congestion, the Islamabad Traffic Police have suggested several detours for commuters:
1. Inter-City Travel (Peshawar and Lahore)
- Peshawar to Rawalpindi: Avoid GT Road. Instead, utilize the Taxila Motorway, Chakri, Chak Beli Road, or Rawat Road.
- Lahore to Peshawar: Reverse the above detour by taking Rawat to Chak Beli Road, then connecting via Chakri to the Taxila Motorway.
- Peshawar to Lahore: Drivers should opt for the Taxila Motorway or transit through Tarnol Phatak toward the Fateh Jang Motorway.
2. Local Commutes
- Bhara Kahu to Rawalpindi: Use Korang Road, Bani Gala, or Lehtrar Road to bypass the central closures.
- Faisal Avenue & Zero Point: All traffic in this vicinity is being rerouted toward 9th Avenue.
These measures are essential for the security of visiting foreign delegations. Residents are encouraged to stay updated via official police radio channels and to allow extra travel time to avoid delays during this diplomatic event.
