In response to the upcoming diplomatic summit between the US and Iran, authorities in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have implemented a massive security lockdown.
Strict Security Measures in the Twin Cities
The government has ordered a total shutdown of public and private transport in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. This decision follows the announcement that high-level delegations from the US and Iran will meet in the capital to discuss a permanent peace deal, following a successful two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan.
Transport Closures
- Metro Bus: The Red Line service between Rawalpindi and Islamabad is completely closed until further notice.
- Public & Goods Transport: Heavy vehicles and public buses are banned from entering or moving within the cities.
- Restricted Zones: The “Red Zone” (government district) is entirely sealed off. Major roads like the Islamabad Expressway and Srinagar Highway will either be closed or face frequent blocks.
Police and Military Deployment
To ensure the safety of the visiting officials, nearly 18,000 security personnel including the police, Rangers, and Frontier Corps have been stationed across the region.
- High Alert: Officers are forbidden from using mobile phones while on duty and must wear full riot gear.
- Special Units: Sniper teams and elite commandos are patrolling the streets.
- Checkpoints: More than 600 temporary security posts have been set up to monitor everyone entering or leaving the cities.
Orders for Residents and Businesses
The administration has issued strict orders for certain establishments to clear out:
- Hotels and Hostels: Guest houses, student hostels, and hotels have been told to shut down and lock their doors.
- Religious Schools: Authorities are considering evacuating seminaries located near sensitive areas.
- Identification: Only authorized personnel with official ID cards are allowed near the meeting routes.
Travel Advice and Alternative Routes
If you need to travel between the two cities, traffic police recommend the following:
- Avoid Main Arteries: Stay away from Faisal Avenue and the Islamabad Expressway.
- Use Open Roads: Use 9th Avenue and Margalla Road as the primary paths for moving between Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
- Diversions: If Zero Point is blocked, drivers should take the Srinagar Highway toward Stadium Road or Murree Road.
Officials are asking the public to stay patient and cooperate with law enforcement, as these measures are temporary and intended to maintain peace during these high-stakes international talks.
