WhatsApp is working on a more flexible way to handle disappearing messages. Here is a simplified breakdown of the upcoming changes:
The Big Change: “After Reading” Timers
Right now, if you set a message to disappear, the clock starts ticking the moment you hit send. This means a message could delete before the other person even sees it.
The new update introduces a “Read-Receipt” trigger:
- The countdown only begins after the recipient opens the message.
- This ensures the person actually sees the info before it vanishes.
New Timing Options
Instead of the current long-term options (like 24 hours or 90 days), this new feature focuses on shorter, more immediate windows. Early tests show you might be able to choose:
- 5 minutes
- 1 hour
- 12 hours
WhatsApp is also cleaning up its settings menu to avoid confusion. The app will likely have a redesigned layout that clearly separates the old “time since sent” method from the new “time since read” method.
This feature is currently in the “Beta” testing phase for Android. It isn’t available to everyone just yet, but it should roll out globally once the bugs are ironed out.
This change is part of ongoing efforts by WhatsApp to improve privacy and give users more control over their personal communication. It is especially useful for people who share sensitive or temporary information and want it to disappear after being viewed.
However, officials have not yet confirmed the final release date, and the feature may still change before the official launch.
